This bike tour will begin at the City Park Boat and Bike Rentals at Big Lake Trail. Taking safe, marked biking routes, we will bike to the 17th Street Canal breach (6932 Bellaire Drive) and hear a short history of the breach disaster.  Then we will bike through the Lakeview neighborhood, through beautiful City Park to the London Avenue Canal breach (5300 Warrington Drive) in the Filmore Gardens neighborhood of Gentilly.  Again, we will hear a short history of the breach disaster.  We will then return to City Park.  The bike tour is 12 miles and takes about 90 minutes including the levee breach talks.

There is no charge to attend the bike tour. However if you do not own a bike and would still like to participate, you may rent a bike from JoyRide bike rentals. This Jane’s Walk will travel down the commercial corridor of Oak Street from Carrollton to the Mississippi River Levee Park and then back up Oak to Carrollton. Discussion will range from the history of Oak Street to recent development since hurricane Katrina and will also cover the current life and culture on Oak Street.  This walk promises to give a picture of a historic yet thriving and developing urban main street.

Start your Jazzfest Saturday on Freret Street seeing the work of Jane Jacobs in action.

The guided tour starts at 9AM in front of Village Coffee (5335 Freret Street – on the corner of Freret and Jefferson) and ends at 10 am at High Hat Café (4500 Freret).

Led by neighborhood residents and business owners- topics covered will include: a brief history of the area, small business development, zoning, blight, green + new construction techniques, building restoration, tax credits and how these issues relate to, and were impacted by the work Jane Jacobs to create this Freretian renaissance post “K”.

The Lafitte Greenway Gallivant will lead Jane’s Walkers on an exploration of the future Lafitte Corridor. The planned urban pathway endeavors to reconnect New Orleans vibrant neighborhoods and revive one of the city’s historic transportation routes. The walk will provide a platform to discuss local businesses, housing and transportation infrastructure, potential for growth as well as the challenges we face as a community in developing the Lafitte Greenway. This informational walk also serves to illuminate the rich culture of the diverse and resilient residents of the Lafitte Corridor. Look for your Jane’s Walk guides wearing their certified Greeway Ambassador t-shirts.

The portage road was the earliest path from the river to the lake, and was used by the Native Americans before the French began exploring the area. With the coming of the French colonizers it became the main road for bringing supplies and people to the new settlement on the Mississippi. During the late 1700′s and first half of the 1800′s, it became the fashionable road of the area, along which many lovely homes were built, most of them two-story plantation type homes. This area, along with Gentilly, was one of the earliest and most fashionable suburbs of New Orleans.

We will ride our bikes along the 1.5 Mile route to the Bayou, stopping to study important buildings settled along the way. Once we reach the Bayou, riders will be on their own to either return back downtown or head out across the city – or even just a few blocks over to Jazz Fest in the Fairgrounds!

Host: This Jane’s Roll is hosted by leading New Orleans Architect and Planner – and Bayou St. John resident – Allen Eskew, FAIA. His practice, Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, is currently designing and leading projects all around the region and has a national reputation for design excellence. Allen established the firm in 1989 after his professional emergence as the Project Director for the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition.

This walking discussion will cover the people, places and current improvement efforts of the Irish Channel–one of the most racially and economically diverse neighborhoods in New Orleans. This neighborhood is conveniently sandwiched between shops, restaurants and bars which line Magazine Street and the Port of New Orleans. Light industrial businesses pepper the neighborhood including NOLA Brewery and the Turnbull Bakery Melba Toast factory. Churches, schools and parks provide places for assembly and we’ll explore them, and more!
